writing=reading / laziness

I think most people would agree that wannabe filmmakers and TV show creators are visual people. They may not be big readers. They may only write because it's a means to an end.

So with that said, what would make anyone think that interns at production companies, agencies and management companies, who aspire to be filmmakers and TV show creators really want to sit around all day and read scripts?

Answer: They probably don't... Well at least, human nature tells me that if I'm not a "big reader", then I'm not going to happily sit around and thoroughly read a stack of scripts from unproduced writers.

Some of the material probably sucks. A lot of it is probably the same old, same old.  SO if you burn out a reader with those types of scripts before they are able to reach a possible gem, then you're doing the entire world an injustice. Just sayin'. And if they're just out of high school, then what do they know anyway? What have they watched to sway their opinions? They couldn't have watched nearly as much television or as many movies as someone in their thirties.

So regardless of the readers' ages, this is where writers need to become smarter. Ask yourself: Are you really a "writer" or is it a means to an end for you too? If you're wanting to tell a story, then do it in a way that keeps people's attention.

Before sending your amazing script off into "the pile", consider creating something short and sweet to grab "their" attention.
  1. Shoot a trailer
  2. Shoot a sizzle reel
  3. Shoot a prequel short or web pilot
  4. Write a web comic
  5. Create a simple animation
Of course whatever you send them has to be interesting. And I do speak from experience, here. A couple of years ago, I shot a twenty minute, pilot presentation. It turned out great, but what really grabbed them was the ninety second trailer that went with it. We almost got a deal. Yes, came very close but it was during the economic meltdown when shows already on TV, were being canceled in droves. But it was an amazing learning experience and what put me into this mindset.

Enjoy your creativity and think outside the box!
